Carbon Tool, the software BuildGreen sells alongside its certification work, turns activity data into a tCO₂e footprint reportable under CSRD and GRI. Instead of a rewrite, an incremental refactor answered the platform's limits.

Challenge
BuildGreen certifies buildings to BREEAM, LEED, WELL and EDGE, including a LEED Platinum office in Moldova. Progress on Carbon Tool had almost stopped. There was no technical documentation, so change carried risk. Infrastructure was fragmented and mostly manual. Front-end, back-end and infrastructure ran on separate tracks, so integrations broke late. Source and cloud access sat outside its control. Together those limits, and the growing cost of leaving them unaddressed, put the platform's scalability and long-term maintenance at risk.
Solution
① Audit: the code and the infrastructure were reviewed in full before anything changed. ② Refactor: the parts holding progress back were refactored to the 1,100-hour estimate, and the mismatches between the front end and the back end were fixed. ③ New foundation: the platform moved to a cloud setup built for growth, with deployment automated, test and live environments kept separate, access behind a VPN, and backups taken daily. ④ Documentation: the technical documentation the platform had never had was written. ⑤ Stabilisation: the platform behaves predictably under normal load, and continues under controlled evolutive maintenance.
